AUSTRALIA Maritime Safety Authority chairman Stuart Richey AM has used the opening of NAV18 to reflect upon the nation’s long and enduring links with the sea.
Mr Richey noted Australian links with the sea dated back to the times of indigenous people and then expanded during the period of European settlement.
“We are a nation shaped by the sea,” he said.
He noted further that globalisation had been underpinned by seafarers.
“Australia’s economic prosperity in global trade is made possible by shipping,” he said.
“We have well-run ports and carefully-managed shipping lanes.”
Mr Richey wound up his presentation with a mentioned of more modern topics of globalisation and cyber security.
NAV18 is being held at the Sofitel at Broadbeach.
