METALLICA Minerals has released a statement confirming the federal government has approved the development of the Urquhart Bauxite Project on Cape York Peninsula.

This is understood to be in accordance with the 1999 Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

According to the company, the development has been approved with conditions in line with those expected by Metallica.

Metallica says it is awaiting Queensland state government approval for the mining lease while progressing a separate approval for the haul road linking the Project with Hay Point port, near Weipa.

Metallica chief executive, Simon Slesarewich, was excited by the progress.

“This is an important milestone in the development of the Urquhart Bauxite Project and clearly demonstrates that the environmental plan developed for the Project is sustainable and meets best practice standards as determined by federal authorities,” Mr Slesarewich said.

“We look forward to receiving Queensland state government approvals and transitioning Urquhart into production.”
