PANAMANIAN bulker Ikan Senyur (IMO 9573830) has rescued two fisherman from a life raft 40km west of Lake Macleod, Western Australia.
The men were forced to abandon their fishing vessel Conquistador in the early hours of Monday after it caught fire.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority detected a distress beacon and dispatched a Challenger jet from Perth to the area while also diverting Ikan Senyur.
The Challenger jet spotted a life raft at 4.50am and at 5.10am the Ikan Senyur launched a rescue boat to recover the two men on board.
They were brought on board the Ikan Senyur for treatment.
AMSA search and rescue manager, Alan Lloyd, said the men were lucky to be alive.
“By activating their distress beacon, these men were able to alert us to their situation immediately,” Mr Lloyd said.
“I’d like to thank the crew of the Ikan Senyur for responding to our request for assistance.
“Every minute counts in search and rescue, and often the best-placed people to respond to a distress situation are those nearby.”
