Busy, busy month of May in the Pilbara

A RECORD was smashed at Port Hedland on 2 June when 12 vessels departed during a 24-hour period, carrying a total of 2.4m tonnes of cargo – 187,600 tonnes more than the previous record, set in February 2018.

Shipping figures for the month of May were also impressive at Pilbara Ports Authority’s ports, which handled a total throughput of 62.2m tonnes – an increase of 5% on May 2017’s throughput, according to the latest information available from PPA.

Zooming in to Port Hedland, we find the port handled a total of 45.8m tonnes in May (2% more than May 2017).

Of Port Hedland’s total throughput, 45m tonnes was iron ore, and 134,000 tonnes were imports.

Port of Dampier handled 15.9m tonnes of throughput in May, an increase of 11% on the same month last year.

Imports into Dampier decreased 11% from May 2107 to 82,000 tonnes last month.
