CMA CGM looks to ‘smart containers’

FRENCH shipping behemoth CMA CGM says ‘smart containers’ will form a central plank of efforts to provide enhanced customer service.

The company recently unveiled its ‘Customer Centricity’ program, aimed at providing new products and services to the market.

According to CMA CGM, the smart containers were developed in partnership with and powered by TRAXENS.

They are said to be the most advanced system providing complete, reliable and on-time data.

They are to allow for:

  • Near real-time information, even during inland transport: geographic position, external and internal temperature variations, humidity variations, shocks and door openings;
  • Personalised alerts;
  • Visibility to react to aberrations in supply chains;
  • Geo-fencing notification of in/out movement of defined sites;
  • Container unloading notification to organize inland transport right on time.

Smart containers use new technology and “next generation connectivity” for continuous tracking of cargo.

“With more than 15.6m containers transported by CMA CGM in 2016, the introduction of smart containers into the Group’s fleet means that large amounts of information will be collected and analysed to improve the service provided to our customers,” the company said in a statement.

A year ago CMA CGM chairman and chief executive Rodolphe Saadé defined ‘Customer Centricity’ as one of the Group’s “core strategies”.

A spokesperson for ANL (a subsidiary) said they would be part of the smart container program as CMA CGM had a global pool of containers used by all services.
