THE Bureau of Meteorology expects a tropical low in northern Western Australia to develop into a tropical cyclone by 8pm local time tonight.
The Bureau predicts the storm will increase in strength to a Category 3 cyclone before making landfall in the eastern Pilbara region.
Although not expected to bear the brunt of the storm’s impact when it makes landfall on Sunday evening, Port Hedland is expected to be affected by the cyclone.
As of Friday (16 February) afternoon, the storm’s centre is 65 kilometres north of Broom. It is tracking west southwest at 23 kilometres per hour.
Tropical Cyclone Joyce closed Port Hedland for a short time last month.
