German logistics firm takes over Aussie company

GERMAN logistics firm Rhenus Group is expanding into Australia as it founds Rhenus Logistics Australia with the purchase of O’Brien Customs and Forwarding.

Founded as a pure customs-clearance firm by Jan and Shane O’Brien in 1996, the family business has offered air and sea fright transportation in addition to customs services for the past seven years from offices in northern Melbourne.

Rhenus plans to expand the company’s current operations into areas such as domestic traffic; support for imports and exports; as well as warehouse and integrated logistics.

Rhenus chief operating officer, ocean freight Asia, Jan Harnisch said the takeover of O’Brien Customs and Forwarding, and the founding of Rhenus Logistics Australia would enable the company to cover the entire country.

“As a result of the acquisition, we’re gaining experienced employees with local expertise for the global operations of the air and ocean business unit at Rhenus Freight Logistics too,” he said.

Rhenus is based in Berlin, Germany and has business sites at more than 580 locations around the world, with a workforce of 28,000.
