WOLLONGONG City Council Lord Mayor, Gordon Bradbery OAM, has talked of how maritime industries are strengthening the economy of the Illawarra region.

Cr Bradbery gave the official welcome at the Regional Ports 2017 conference in Wollongong, an event hosted by Ports Australia and Informa, the former publisher of Lloyd’s List Australia.

He noted the region was in transformation and had been doing so since the 1980s when there was a massive downturn in the steel industry.

“The diverse commodity base at Port Kembla reflects the growth of the region and its capacity to service growing markets,” Cr Bradbery said.

“Historically the port has served regional industries, predominantly coal and steel.

“In more recent years the port has diversified its trade base, to include general, bulk and breakbulk cargoes, containers and motor vehicle imports,” he said.

The Lord Mayor was similarly upbeat about the arrival of cruiseships last year.
