NEW South Wales Labor treasury spokesman, Ryan Park, says he’s determined to fight for the needs of port infrastructure, even if it puts him in conflict with locals opposed to trucks.

Mr Park is also the shadow minister for the Illawarra region, an area that takes in Port Kembla.

“It is absolutely critical, going forward, that policymakers understand and start to move infrastructure toward continuing expansion,” he said.

“As a local member, I can assure you I have had some heated debates with locals about not wanting trucks etc etc.

“I remind them very clearly that we have one of the highest youth unemployment levels in the country…

“So I will be doing the opposite. I will be doing everything I can to make sure that the associated infrastructure is developed around the port.”

Mr Park said he wanted to be Treasurer (ultimately) who understood the benefits from ports.

Mr Park was a guest speaker at the Regional Ports 2017 conference, an event organised by Ports Australia and Informa, the former publisher of Lloyd’s List Australia.
