MITSUI OSK Lines (MOL) announced that it had established a partnership aimed at developing an advanced navigation support system, which could be used in conventional navigation, as well as in the “autonomous ships of the future”.

MOL’s partners in the project include MOL Techno-Trade; the Japanese National Institute of Maritime; Port and Aviation Technology; and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT).

MOL said that over the course of the joint study, all parties are to conduct basic research on advanced navigation systems under the direction of TUMSAT Honorary Professor Hayama Imazu.

Specifically, the joint study aims to develop a navigation support system that introduces the concept of “obstacle zone by target” (OZT), leading to the application of technologies such as “automatic radar plotting aid”.
