AROUND 140 tall ship devotees and friends headed to the historic Windsor Hotel in Melbourne last week. The occasion was a fundraiser for the tall ship Alma Doepel which is currently undergoing restoration in the Docklands precinct.

Maritime analyst and one of the key restorers Peter van Duyn said the event was well supported with more than $50,000 raised through auction items, sponsorship and donations.

Melbourne’s legendary Nine Network television show presenter Peter Hitchener performed MC duties.

A highlight of the event was a presentation by Sandra Pankhurst, a former winner of the Victorian Premier’s Award.

Ms Pankhurst talked a bit about her extraordinary life in light of her transgender background, having been both a husband and a wife and also becoming Australia’s first female funeral director.

She later made a name for herself establishing a successful specialist cleaning business.

Matthew Marshall from Biggin & Scott ran the auction.

Mr van Duyn said the money would go towards re-planking the old ship.
