WINDS of change are blowing at the Port of Portland with the announcement of a new harbour master/marine manager.
Management has confirmed Jason Sweetman will from 30 June take over from David Shennan who has been in the role for the past five years.
Captain Shennan confirmed to DCN he was moving on and would resume running his marine consultancy North and Trew.
According to Port of Portland, Mr Sweetman began his maritime career as a deck cadet with BHP Transport in 1993 and now holds a Master Class 1 unlimited ticket.
He holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration – Logistics and Maritime Management. He also holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (nautical science).
He has spent 15 years in vessel chartering and operations working for companies in Australia and London as a freight forwarder.
Most recently he has been working as a marine teacher in tropical Cairns – quite a change from the chilly conditions he is likely to face on the Victorian south-west coast.
He is to be joined in Portland by his wife and two young boys.
