Pilbara Ports smashed records in December

PILBARA Ports Authority has rumbled into the new year with several new shipping records under its belt, including new monthly throughput records across its ports, record tonnage on a single tide and record number of vessel visits to Port Hedland.

In December, PPA’s total combined throughput came to 63.8m tonnes, an increase of 6% on the same month last year. This includes a record monthly iron ore export total of 60.1m tonnes.

Port Hedland’s December throughput was an increase of 6% on the same month in 2016 with a record 47.1m tonnes of total throughput last month.

Iron ore accounted for nearly all of Hedland’s throughput at 46.1m tonnes, a 5% increase on the same month in 2016.

Port Hedland broke other records in December, including a new record tonnage on a single tide achieved on 27 December when a total of 1,589,061 tonnes of cargo sailed on eight vessels, beating the previous record, set in February 2016, by 77,084 tonnes.

And, the Port smashed yet another record in December: 2,183,611 tonnes were loaded over a 24-hour period onto 12 vessels.

Also, a record number of vessels visited Port Hedland in December with a total of 272 visits.

Port of Dampier also broke a record in December, with 16.7m tonnes of total throughput for the month. Imports were 78,000 tonnes, showing a decrease of 6% on December 2016.
