Pilbara throughput on the up in January despite storm closure

PILBARA Ports Authority reported a slight drop in throughput in January from record highs in December.

PPA reported total throughput across all of its ports in January to be 55.8m tonnes – a 13% decrease on December’s numbers but a 7% increase on January 2017.

Port Hedland’s throughput in January was reported at 41.8m tonnes, an increase on the same month the previous year despite the Port’s closure for 43 hours when ex-Tropical Cyclone Joyce breezed through the area.

Hedland’s iron ore exports for January totalled 41m tonnes – an increase of 2% on January 2017 and imports decreased by 3% in the same period to 118,000 tonnes.

The Port of Dampier handled a throughput of 13.7m tonnes in January, an increase of 16% on the previous year, with imports tolling 79,000 tonnes – a decrease of 31% on January 2017.
