A STRONG leader and consummate gentleman is how former stevedoring executive Richard J Hein is being remembered.

Mr Hein passed away on October 2.

Born in London in 1936, Mr Hein was a director of P&O Australia Ltd from 1970 until 2005 and served as managing director from 1990 until 2005.

He was also member of the Business Council of Australia and Business Higher Education Round Table.

P&O Australia, as one of a wholly owned subsidiary of The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, was bought out by DP World in 2006.

“Richard is warmly remembered by those who worked with him as a strong leader, a consummate gentleman, and a mentor,” a DPWA spokesman said.

“Together with Captain Richard Setchell, Richard led the company through many changes, including a number of waterfront disputes.”

A funeral is to be held at the WD Rose Chapel, 221 Charman Road, Cheltenham, Victoria, on Monday October 9, starting at 10am.
