A PANEL session opening the Global Shippers Forum in Melbourne has heard of how the growth in e-commerce has resulted in a surge of package traffic worldwide.
World Customs Organisation director compliance and trade facilitation Ana Hinojosa talked of “the tsunami of packages” which was here to stay.
She said customs officers worldwide risked being “overwhelmed” by this trend.
“With regards e-commerce, it’s here to stay, the tsunami is not going to fade – it’s not like a (real) tsunami which comes and then goes away,” Ms Hinojosa said.
“It will continue to be part of our world.”
Ms Hinojosa, who is based in Brussels, continued her presentation outlining global activities to help facilitate the movement of goods while ensuring compliance.
