PILBARA Ports Authority has started clearing Port Hedland of vessels this morning as a tropical low off the Kimberly coast gathered strength to become Tropical Cyclone Joyce.
The Port of Broome closed to shipping yesterday (10 January) ahead of the storm’s impact, according to a local marine notice issued by Kimberley Ports Authority.
TC Joyce is packing winds near the centre of up to 55km per hour, with gusts up to 85km per hour, as of 0500 Australian Western Standard Time. The centre of the storm is 145km north northwest of Broom and 125km west southwest of Cape Leveque. It is moving southwest at 9km per hour.
The Bureau of Meteorology said there is a risk of a “severe” tropical cyclone impacting the Pilbara coast during Friday or early Saturday.
