BOX ship YM Portland (IMO 9236535) is awaiting repairs off Port Moresby after experiencing engine trouble.
Sources in Papua New Guinea told Daily Cargo News the Liberian-flagged ship experienced engine problems while in the Milne Bay area (at the eastern tip of the PNG mainland) in mid-July and was escorted to Port Moresby by a Pacific Towing tugboat.
The MarineTraffic website shows the ship as being at Port Moresby.
New cylinder liners for the engine are understood to have arrived this week, however an expected departure date is still to be confirmed.
Comment has been sought from Yang Ming.
YM Portland has been servicing the China – Australia – Taiwan route and at the time was en route from Kaohsiung in Taiwan to the Australian east coast.
Yang Ming has experienced a challenging period with as many as 85 containers falling over the side of its ship YM Efficiency two months ago as the ship was sailing the waters off the New South Wales Central Coast.
