VICTORIAN Ports Corporation is advertising for companies to submit tenders for pile maintenance works to be carried out at Station Pier during the next two years.

These works are an annual part of an ongoing maintenance program done between cruise seasons.

Station Pier has 7000 timber piles and, according to VPC, it was built with the knowledge that all timber piles would deteriorate at different rates.

Each pile is expected to last for anything between 60 and 90 years.

VPCM replaces piles when there is four to five years of residual life left.

VPCM has found that this provides the most economical lifecycle cost as well as ensuring a good margin of safety,” a spokesperson said. It takes about 30-35 years for a full refresh of all of the piles at Station Pier.
