CYCLONE Damien hit the Pilbara coast during the month of February, which made an impact on throughput at both ports in Port Hedland and Dampier.

The Port of Dampier was closed for 90 hours in February due to the cyclone, while the Port of Port Hedland was closed for 25.5 hours.

Pilbara Ports Authority has delivered a total monthly throughput of 49.7m tonnes for the month of February 2020. This throughput was a 9% decrease compared to the same month in 2019.

The total throughput for the 2019/20 financial year to date is 461Mt, an increase of less than 1% from the same time last year.

The Port of Port Hedland achieved a monthly throughput of 39Mt, of which 38.7Mt was iron ore exports. The monthly throughput was a 1% decrease from February 2019.

Imports through the Port of Port Hedland totalled 128,000 tonnes, a decrease of 22% from the same month in 2019.

The Port of Dampier delivered a total monthly throughput of 9.9Mt, a decrease of 32% from February 2019.

Imports through the Port of Dampier totalled 47,000 tonnes, a decrease of 46% from the same month in 2019.
