MARITIME Industry Australia and the LNG Marine Fuel Institute have joined forces to advance discussions on decarbonisation solutions, which will kick off with a series of webinars entitled Maritime Future Fuels and Energy Efficiency.

Angela Gillham, deputy CEO of MIAL said, “It is vital that we accelerate the development of technology to decarbonize shipping.

“During the pandemic, we have limited options to collaborate face-to-face in the way that we are accustomed to.

“Through this webinar series, we hope to stimulate discussion and ideas, provide a focal point and build a network of interested parties… to advance discussions and identify Australian opportunities and challenges on the road to decarbonising shipping.”

Interested parties will include shipowners, fuel and technology manufacturers, engine designers, scientists, innovators, government and educators.

“We hope that this series will help to bring the leading commercial maritime thinkers together,” Ms Gillham said.

There is a strong business case for change, the move to emerging cleaner fuels has the potential to provide significant industry and jobs growth for Australia if we can leverage our natural advantages.

Margot Matthews, CEO of LNG MFI says: “We expect alternative fuels to play a significant role in the shipping industry achieving the IMO 2050 50% net emission reduction target and in our view LNG will be a large part of the marine fuel mix beyond 2050.

“This webinar series will provide an insight into how we can further enable LNG as a marine fuel into the future as in conjunction we work on zero emission fuels.”

The series will commence on August 4 with the first three sessions in the program designed to provide context and lay the groundwork for ongoing discussions and sharing of ideas.
