ENSURING safe and efficient movement of vessels is the aim of a decision by TasPorts to invest in a new vessel traffic system decision support tool.

The new system, developed by maritime safety system provider Kordia, is to operate from TasPorts’ vital headquarters in Launceston.

It is to provide visibility and decision support tools for the safe operation of vessels in Bell Bay, Hobart, Devonport, Burnie, as well as the smaller ports of Stanley, Port Latta, Strahan, Grassy, Lady Baron and Coles Bay.

“With more than 99% of the state’s freight coming in and out of Tasmania by sea, it is important for us to have the best capabilities, to ensure the safe and efficient navigation of vessels calling into our ports,” said Craig Ward, TasPorts VTS manager.

The new VTS DST solution is expected to give TasPorts’ vessel traffic services team enhanced capabilities, with real time actionable data and insights to provide improved traffic management performance.

The system is also expected to provide TasPorts with VTS capabilities compliant with the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities.

Kordia maritime business development manager, Christian Hillier, said the new solution was designed to help TasPorts improve VTS efforts.

“TasPorts is responsible for the safety and security of ports in Tasmania, they deliver many critical services that ensure the protection of vessels, personnel and the marine environment,” Mr Hillier said.

“Kordia is delighted to partner with TasPorts to optimise their operations and this VTS DST solution will provide the tools, intelligence and flexibility their business requires.” The project is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.
