IT WAS a solid start to the New Year for Fremantle’s container traffic, according to the latest trade statistics available from Fremantle Ports.

Total throughput for January 2021 was reported to be 68,283 TEU, an 8% increase on December 2020’s figures, due to increases in exported empties and imported full containers. However, throughput for the month fell short of January 2020’s figures by 4% or 2979 TEU.

Imported goods made up a majority of the port’s throughput for the month, with 35,481 TEU, or 51%, of full containers being unloaded at the port. An additional 622 TEU of empty containers were also received during the month. Overseas ports accounted for 91% of January’s imports.

Of the total 32,802 TEU exported, 55% were full containers. Of all exports leaving the port in January, 97% were destined for faraway lands.
