GENERAL cargo ship MCP Graz was detained last week after it allided with a jetty as it departed the Port of Dampier under pilotage.
The vessel is on a new, regular freight service between Singapore and Dampier launched last month by Rio Tinto and Toll Group. MCP Graz arrived at Dampier from Singapore on 19 February delivering supplies for Rio Tinto’s operations in the Pilbara, according to a statement from the mining giant.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said the incident occurred when the Cyprus-flagged vessel was departing the port on 20 February.
After it made contact with the jetty, the ship was brought to anchorage where AMSA detained it. It was also inspected by its classification society.
“According to the classification society’s surveyor’s report, the vessel had sustained damage consisting of two small tears to the hull and a hole to the starboard aft peak tank,” AMSA told DCN in a statement.
“All the damage areas were well above the vessel’s waterline and presented no risk to the marine environment. Temporary repairs were carried out to the satisfaction of the classification society and AMSA before it was released from detention on 23 February 2021.”
The vessel is required to have permanent repairs carried out by 5 March and it will be re-inspected when it returns to Australia.
The 7734-DWT MCP Graz was built in 2010 and is 117 metres long.
