About the role

We currently have an opportunity for a General Manager – Vessels to join our team, based in Port Melbourne, Victoria.

Reporting directly to the Strait Link Executive General Manager, this role provides a unique opportunity to have a significant impact on the future success of our business. As General Manager – Vessels, you will have overall accountability for the Vessels business unit, including day-to-day operations and the management of people and assets. In addition, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of the long-term strategy of the Vessels business unit and the delivery of key strategic projects to deliver vessel optimisation.

At the leadership level, this role will work closely with the Strait Link leadership team to be a guardian of our values, culture, engagement, and employee value proposition.

What you will do

Your key responsibilities in this position will include:

  • Leadership Performance & Culture: Lead the Vessels team by effectively building relationships, supporting, and developing the team, and creating a collaborative, high performing culture.
  • Operational Excellence: Drive operational efficiencies through optimal utilisation of people and assets, effective cost management and a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Strategy & Transformation: Lead the implementation of key strategic initiatives, continuous improvement programs and transformational projects, including ensuring that strategic initiatives are budgeted, managed, resourced, and delivered within expected parameters.
  • Regulatory & Statutory Compliance: Ensure vessel and crew compliance with Company policies, procedures, regulatory and statutory requirements.
  • Industrial Relations: ​​​Pro-actively manage Industrial Relations issues with support from HR & IR. Lead Enterprise Agreement negotiations for Vessel Operations related EA’s and ensure the correct application of Strait Link industrial agreements.
  • ​​​​​​​Health, Safety & Environment: ​​​​​​​Lead by example and ensure that all aspects of Strait Link’s Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) strategy, framework and standards/policies are implemented, communicated, embedded, and monitored.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Management: Develop and maintain key internal and external stakeholder relationships to support the delivery of key strategic and business initiatives.

What you will bring 

  • Senior leadership experience in an operational role within the maritime industry
  • Tertiary qualifications in management or a business-related discipline. Maritime certifications will be highly regarded.
  • Excellent people skills and the ability to develop and foster strong and positive relationships with all internal and external stakeholders
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to influence change and successfully negotiate agreed outcomes
  • Desire and ability to achieve objectives and deliver results with a long-term and strategic focus
  • Proven experience in the management of Industrial Relations matters
