Victorian Ports Corporation (Melbourne) (VPCM) is a statutory authority responsible for the management and safe navigation of commercial vessels in Port Phillip and the port waters of the Port of Melbourne. Port Phillip is Melbourne’s gateway for commercial shipping and is a highly valued community asset for boating, fishing, yachting and other aquatic pastimes, providing a critical service for the international and domestic maritime trade needs of Victoria and south-eastern Australia.

Reporting to the Executive General Manager Marine & Navigation, the Manager Navigation Services, which includes the functions of Deputy Harbour Master, manages the provision of VPCM’s navigation systems, port services, and safety advice to mariners. The role is responsible for ensuring VPCM’s compliance obligations are met regarding emergency preparedness and incident response (including marine pollution response) and representing VPCM at external port operations committees.

Critical to success will be a working understanding of relevant maritime legislation and Australian and overseas shipping and port practices (including VTS), together with highly developed emergency response management and analytical capabilities, underpinned by strategic communication skills.

To be eligible for this rare opportunity, candidates will need an appropriate Certificate of Competency recognised by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority or equivalent, and suitability to be licenced as an Assistant Harbour Master under the provisions of the Marine Safety Act (Vic) 2010.
