SOUTH Pacific International Container Terminal, a subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services, in Lae, Papua New Guinea, recently received three new hybrid rubber tyred gantries.

According to ICTSI, the RTG’s are part of their program to strengthen and enhance overall operational efficiency at PNG’s main container terminal.

This investment of more than PGK15.6 million, places SPICT ahead of its 2022 commitments and 50% above the initial agreed outlay on operational efficiency improvements.

With a lifting capacity of 41tonnes, the RTGs, both running on diesel and electric power, are expected to be deployed operationally this month.

The 16-wheel cable reel RTGs can stack one over five containers high and six containers wide.

They include several safety and productivity enhancing features. Once the commissioning is complete, these RTGs are set to be “automation-ready”.

ICTSI South Pacific has invested in three mobile harbour cranes for its Lae terminal and there are presently six PNG crane operators, three of whom are female, currently training at the ICTSI Manila flagship.

“We are very proud of this order,” ICTSI South Pacific chief executive Anil Singh said.

“It is the result of our commitment to innovation and proven performance around the world, and it will further strengthen our presence in Papua New Guinea.” Mr Singh said technology was a central part of their terminal operations and investment was being placed in training to grow competency and skills.
