AMPI conference opens in Adelaide

THE AUSTRALASIAN Marine Pilots Institute Regional Ports & Pilotage Conference has begun in SA, the venue being The Hilton Adelaide City. 

Flinders Ports general manager Carl Kavina delivered a keynote presentation. 

Captain Kavina spoke about the role of Flinders Ports as a landlord, stevedore and operator. 

He provided a snapshot of the 2024-25 year, talking about such areas as subsidiary business such as Flinders Spencer Gulf Marine Services (FSGMS) in Whyalla. 

He also talked about pilotage and the emerging topic of cruise ship management, as well as new projects including GatewaySA, SA Premium Cement and Venice Energy. 

He talked about the FPH mission to be an industry leader in providing safe, innovative and sustainable port-related infrastructure and how to ensure this, they commissioned a detailed evaluation by container terminal experts to determine the future operating mode of FACT. 

The conference continues on Tuesday 4 November with session on reducing distractions and training, and digital route planning. followed by a gala dinner. 

The conference finishes on Wednesday but not before a tour of Flinders Port Holdings and a session on an ATSB accident investigation.
