AURIZON has announced the start of iron ore train services for miner Yilgarn Iron, marking a new chapter in the ASX-listed rail operator’s long-standing involvement in Western Australia’s resources sector.

Trains are now operating from Koolyanobbing to the Port of Esperance for export, with Aurizon delivering iron ore under a new contract for haulage services through to the end of December 2029.

The contract will see up to 4.4 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of iron ore hauled using Aurizon’s existing rollingstock and infrastructure, providing a low capital solution that reflects Aurizon’s operational strength and capability.

“We’re proud to be supporting Yilgarn Iron as they restart operations across the Yilgarn Hub,” Aurizon group executive of bulk and containerised freight George Lippiatt said. “Aurizon has a deep history operating in this corridor, and we’re committed to helping unlock future growth for the region.”

Yilgarn Iron acquired the Yilgarn Iron Project from Mineral Resources Ltd in June 2025, including the Koolyanobbing, Carina, Mt Jackson Range, Windarling, Deception, Parker Range, Mt Manning and other historic hematite deposits.

The first train of iron ore was successfully delivered over the weekend, with Aurizon ramping up to full-capacity 160-wagon trains over the coming months, each carrying approximately 12,000 tonnes per service.

“This is a win for local jobs and regional vitality,” Yilgarn Iron managing director Fergus Campbell said.
