SWIRE Shipping affiliate SSPL US has concluded the acquisition of independent vessel operator Westwood Shipping Lines.

Westwood services the Transpacific trade as a multipurpose operator, connecting the Pacific Northwest with markets in Japan, Korea and China.

The company was founded in 1980 and is currently headquartered in Puyallup, Washington in the United States.

SSPL US signed a definite agreement in April this year to acquire Westwood from J-WeSco, a subsidiary of Japan-based Sumitomo Warehouse, under which it has operated since 2011.

“We now look forward to working very closely with our new colleagues at Westwood to welcome them to the Swire Shipping family and help Westwood and its customers and partners grow from strength to strength,” Swire Shipping managing director James Woodrow said.

Swire Shipping said the acquisition complements its strategy to widen its liner network while vertically integrating many of its shipping services with land services.

Swire Shipping currently owns a multi-purpose fleet providing a wide range of specialist containerised, project, heavy lift, breakbulk and mini-bulk cargoes solutions.
