OCEAN Network Express has signed shipbuilding contracts with both Hyundai Heavy Industries and Nihon Shipyard to build five vessels each, adding a total of 10 modern very large container ships to ONE’s fleet.

These ships will have a nominal capacity of more than 13,700 TEU and are to be delivered in 2025.

ONE said the vessels are designed with the highest efficiency standards. The company said they would be outfitted with technology to reduce navigational impacts to the environment.

They are planned to be able to use ammonia and methanol as fuel. The ships will also be outfitted with carbon capture and storage technology.

ONE’s fleet currently has a capacity of 1.5 million TEU, or 5.9% of the global total, according to Alphaliner. ONE has a total of 34 vessels on order, with a combined capacity of 464,192 TEU.
