CSL Australia has been named the latest member of a consortium to establish a green iron industry in South Australia.

The shipping supplier is to fulfil Green Iron SA’s logistics needs for bulk magnetite export from the so-called ‘iron triangle’, the region encompassing Whyalla, Port Augusta and Port Pirie.

CSL vice-president, commercial, Dan Wilson said the move was a notable achievement.

“CSL is proud to contribute its maritime expertise to the Green Iron SA consortium and help build a sustainable green iron industry in South Australia,” he said.

The firm is an owner-operator of self-unloading and transhipment vessels with operations in the Upper Spencer Gulf, where it manages a floating offshore transhipment system near Whyalla.

The system transfers iron ore from smaller feeder vessels to large Capesize vessels using self-unloading barges and telescopic ship-loaders.

The consortium launched in October 2024 by Magnetite Mines, Aurizon Holdings, Flinders Port Holdings and GHD, aims to combine the resources of South Australia’s Braemar iron region with renewable energy capacity.

Plans begin with the Razorback Iron Ore project to supply low-carbon steel.

Magnetite Mines announced its decision to increase the scale of the first stage of the Razorback Iron Ore Project in 2022 in response to industry feedback and emerging market developments.

CSL’s participation completes the transport corridor from SA mines to a potential global market.
