ORGANISED Crime Squad detectives have charged two people after seizing nearly 10 kilos of the illicit drug ice following an investigation into the alleged importation of prohibited drugs.

On 2 April 2021, officers from Australian Border Force intercepted a consignment of kitchen equipment which arrived in Sydney from the US.

During a subsequent deconstruction, the consignment was found to contain 9.7 kilos of a crystallised substance concealed within a metal kettle.

The substance was tested and returned a presumptive positive result for methylamphetamine (ice), with an estimated potential street value of $1.46 million.

An investigation was subsequently commenced by detectives from the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad, with assistance from the NSW Crime Commission, who conducted a controlled delivery.

Following extensive investigations, a 32-year-old man and a 27-year old woman were arrested at Mascot Police Station just before 1630 on 28 June 2021.

They were both charged with conspiracy to import commercial quantity of border-controlled drug and attempted import commercial quantity of border-controlled drug.

It will be alleged in court that the pair were involved in the attempted import of 9.7 kilos of ice in April this year.

It will be further alleged the pair were involved in a conspiracy to import 7.8kg of cocaine, with an estimated potential street value of $1.95 million, from the US to NSW.

Investigations by the Organised Crime Squad are continuing.
