ADANI Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited says it has signed up for the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a global program seeking to define and promotes best practices in science-based target setting and independently assesses company’ targets.

APSEZ is the only port in India and seventh port in the world to sign the commitment letter to SBTi.

It has also committed to support the Taskforce on Climate Related Financial Disclosure.

Through SBTi, companies are committing to set science-based emissions reduction targets — across their entire value chain — that are consistent with keeping global warming to 1.5° Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

Adani Ports and APSEZ, is the largest integrated logistics player in India, with eleven ports and terminals representing 24% of India’s total port capacity.

As part of its commitment to SBTi, APSEZ will have 24 months to have its targets approved and published by the SBTi.

Karan Adani, CEO and director of APSEZ said, “As a group, we are committed to a sustainable future driven by continuous interventions in our processes and operations.

“APSEZ is committed to SBTi and TCFD to ensure emission reductions are achieved with defined targets towards the goal of becoming carbon neutral,” Mr Adani said.

“This is another significant step demonstrating the Adani Group’s stated commitment of contributing to India’s COP21 targets and global climate goals.”

The Adani Group has come under fire in Australia for its plans to build one of the worlds’ biggest coal mines in Queensland’s Galilee Basin.

Climate and environment activists, communities and Traditional Owners have opposed the development of the mine, based on the greenhouse impacts of burning coal and Adani’s environmental record globally.
