THE PORT of Melbourne has hosted its third Paddle Against Plastic event with Ocean Crusaders, removing around a half a tonne of rubbish from the marine environment.

On the first day of Spring, around 50 volunteers braved miserable weather to join Port of Melbourne staff on paddle craft, or on foot to help remove the rubbish. Friends of Moonee Ponds Creek, Beach Patrol Australia and Love our Streets were also in attendance.

“Over 1600 plastic bottles were removed along with countless amounts of polystyrene,” a Port of Melbourne spokesperson said.

All rubbish collected is sorted, and entered into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative Database and disposed of accordingly.”

“Outside of these events, Port of Melbourne also works closely with Beach Patrol, and participates in monthly beach clean-ups in Port Melbourne,” the spokesperson said.
