RIVERSIDE MARINE has added a second vessel to its Townsville-based marine research charter fleet, RV Riverside Guardian.

Built in New Zealand, the 34.9-metre RV Riverside Guardian is operating under Riverside Marine’s latest brand, Riverside Oceanic, which provides high-quality specialist charter vessels to the marine research, hydrographic, military and offshore energy markets.

Powered by two Caterpillar C18 engines, each producing 715 horsepower, the twin screwed, twin hulled Riverside Guardian has a range of 5500NM with a maximum speed of 14 knots, 10 knots economically. A system of bow and stern thrusters provides an additional high level of manoeuvrability.

For research purposes, the RV Riverside Guardian can remain at sea for extended periods of time. On deck it boasts a 140-square-metre spacious area which can accommodate a range of scientific and other equipment allowing scientists to conduct multiple operations in one voyage.

Riverside Marine director Angus Campbell says his company’s significant investment in the vessel to support Australian marine research is already in demand with the vessel immediately under charter for operations with the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) off the coast of Queensland.

“Our team provides the vessel and science support with the crew and all the support the scientists need to do their important work in comfort and above all safety,” Mr Campbell said.

The RV Riverside Guardian is configured for extended voyages, which makes it fit for purpose for detailed research projects and hydrographic work. It has 16 accommodation berths and seven bathrooms and a 24-seat gallery provides additional recreation and multi-purpose space. There is also a dedicated purpose-built first-aid facility.

Operating nationally out of the Port of Townsville, RV Riverside Guardian will join the equally long and purposefully configured Riverside Magnetic, which has a 420-square-metre platform area for specialised modules to be craned on and off the vessel as required.

Mr Campbell says under the Riverside Oceanic brand the pair will support the so-called “blue economy”, which is the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems.

“Riverside Marine is a multigenerational family business committed to contributing to addressing climate change and protecting the health of the reef and we look forward to the Riverside oceanic fleet being part of that effort,” he said.
