TOWING company Smit Lamnalco has delivered 50 washable fabric face masks to Indigenous communities in Weipa to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The masks were supplied by CannDoo Safety.
Weipa, 850km north-west from Cairns, is a remote community in Far North Queensland with a population of about 3900 people.
Weipa Hospital travels further to even more remote communities on Cape York, with a population of 9000, such as Mapoon, population 320, Arakun, population 1270, Lockhart River, population 720, to name a few. Around 64% of the Cape York population is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
Smit Lamnalco Weipa contract manager, Grant Jamieson, met with Kindee Lawty, director of nursing/midwifery and facility manager of Weipa Hospital, to personally hand over the masks.
Ms Lawty will distrubute the masks throughout the Cape in the remote communities where Australia’s most vulnerable peoples reside.
Smit Lamnalco’s Weipa crews and office staff currently comprise more than 20% Indigenous people.
