FEDEX Express has broken ground on the construction of what it says is a new, state-of-the-art regional facility in Queensland’s Bundaberg.

The new purpose-built facility spans 5,962 square metres and will be equipped with an advanced automated conveyor system capable of sorting up to 1,500 packages per hour.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn, and Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Gary Kirk along with FedEx regional team. The new facility is projected to be operational in 2026.

FedEx says new site is designed to meet the rising demand for express freight services and directly supports the region’s robust economic growth and is centrally and strategically located near rapidly expanding industrial precinct and Bundaberg Airport for ‘seamless access’ to the company’s domestic and international express and freight services.

“This new facility in Bundaberg is a direct investment in the future of Australian regional businesses," said Peter Langley, regional vice president of FedEx Australasia. The hub will act as a vital link, creating opportunities for local industry to compete on the global stage, he said.

The Bundaberg region has been recognised as the second-fastest-growing local economy in Queensland, with a growth rate of 7.1%2. The local economy was valued at $5.1 billion at the start of 2024, and its Gross Regional Product (GRP) is now estimated at $6.08 billion.

"The arrival of this new FedEx facility is a clear indicator of confidence in our region’s economy," said Mayor Helen Blackburn. “This is a significant step forward for the economic future of Bundaberg and the Wide Bay-Burne region."

In support of the company’s global goal to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2040 globally, the new facility's design incorporates sustainable building features, including energy-efficient LED lighting and skylights in both the warehouse and office areas.
