Gladstone Ports Corporation is going to the global market to find prospective proponents to construct and operate new container terminal infrastructure “to accommodate growing consumer and industry demand”.

GPC describes Gladstone as Queensland’s largest multi-commodity port and one of Australia’s most strategically positioned maritime gateways.

In the 2024-25 financial year the port handled 20,982 TEU, according to the annual report.

A 54-hectare site has been identified at Port Central in the Priority Port of Gladstone, a premier location for scalable marine and landside infrastructure, GPC says. The site benefits from deepwater access, a sheltered harbour, and direct connections to national road and rail freight networks.

CEO Andrew Johnson said, “We are inviting experienced proponents to help shape the future of container trade in Queensland.

“Gladstone has long been identified as the ideal location for a new container terminal to meet growing industry and market demand, and this ROI marks a significant milestone in our port development strategy.

“The new terminal will enhance supply chain resilience and unlock new trade pathways. It is an exciting investment opportunity.”

The development will require necessary land reclamation, berth pocket dredging, construction of land-backed wharves and quay structures, terminal yards, equipment operational buildings and supporting systems.

GPC notes the port is located 525 kilometres north of Brisbane, incorporates seven main trade localities and 20 operational wharves, and is the main export gateway for Central Queensland’s resource and industrial sectors. It handles more than 117 million tonnes of freight a year across 30 different commodities, including coal, liquefied natural gas, bauxite, alumina, aluminium, petroleum, cement and agriculture.

The port is adjacent to the 27,000-hectare Gladstone State Development Area which has potential for future integrated logistics and warehousing services.

“As a Queensland Government Owned Corporation, GPC will collaborate with investors to deliver high-capacity container infrastructure that enhances supply chain resilience, unlocks new trade pathways and drives sustainable economic growth for Central Queensland and beyond,” it said.
