RECYCLED asphalt roads and a host of green initiatives have paid off as GeelongPorts launched its annual sustainability report with a number one global ranking for five years in a row.

The port celebrated the five-star GRESB rating with an event at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

In attendance were chief executive Brett Winter, Greater Geelong mayor Stretch Konteli OAM and Tour de France winner and four-time Olympian Cadel Evans with industry and community partners.

The 2025 Sustainability Report highlighted data compiled by international consultancy GRESB, formerly known as the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark.

“This year, the port achieved a perfect score of 100 and ranked #1 globally in the 2025 GRESB Infrastructure Asset benchmark for sustainable port and transport infrastructure,” an official statement from the port read.

“This marks the fifth consecutive year the port has secured a five-star rating, reinforcing its reputation for excellence in sustainability.”

The report highlighted GeelongPort’s key achievements as it aims to become Australia’s most sustainable port.

The port has partnered with The National Transport Research Organisation for building asphalt roads at Corio Quay North and Lascelles Wharf.

The port authority has also maintained an annual risk-based monitoring program for land and groundwater use.

A key goal met included a 91% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2018 and a further 7.3% reduction in the past year.

GeelongPort has continued to support Victoria’s clean energy initiatives through its role in the Golden Plains Wind Farm Program, which now powers more than 750,000 homes and represents around 9% of the state’s electricity needs.

Stage 1 was completed in October 2024, preventing over 770,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Stage 2 is now underway, with completion expected in mid-2027.

The Golden Plains Wind Farm, made up of wind turbines and associated electrical infrastructure, is located in Rokewood and around Barunah Park, about 60km north-west of Geelong.

Upon completion, it is expected to have the capacity to generate 800-1000 MW of electricity.

GeelongPort has reinforced its commitment to reconciliation through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.

“This partnership reflects a shared commitment to respectful collaboration and investment in meaningful outcomes for Country, community and culture,” the statement read. “Shared priorities for the year ahead are already taking shape.”

GeelongPort was recognised as one of Work180’s Top 101 Workplaces for Women.
