TASPORTS has appointed industry veteran Captain Allan Gray as interim chief executive while a search continues for a replacement for departing CEO Anthony Donald.

In mid-December 2025 Mr Donald announced his intention to step down at the end of this month, after leading TasPorts in an acting and then permanent capacity for almost ten years.

TasPorts chair Greg McCann today [13 March] announced Captain Gray woukd serve as interim CEO for a fixed term from 16 March 2026 through to 2 October 2026 and lead the organisation during the transition while the board undertakes a search for a permanent CEO.

Mr McCann said Captain Gray brought extensive international port leadership experience to the role.

“Captain Gray has led major port organisations in Australia and internationally, including most recently as chief executive officer of Sentient Ports in Perth, and previously as president and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority in Canada,” Mr McCann said.

“Earlier in his career Captain Gray held senior leadership roles at Fremantle Ports and spent more than two decades at sea across a range of commercial vessels.

“His track record in assisting ports and governments develop solutions to complex port and supply chain challenges makes him a highly suitable and capable candidate to lead TasPorts through this time of transition.”

Captain Gray has also served as president/vice president of the International Harbour Masters Association, as a director of the Australian Maritime College, as federal master of the Company of Master Mariners Australia, and held roles with Perkins Shipping, Maritime Safety Queensland, and AMSA.

Mr McCann acknowledged the contribution of Mr Donald.

“Anthony has led TasPorts through a period of significant change and investment, strengthening the organisation’s focus on safety, sustainability and the delivery of major infrastructure projects across the state," Mr McCann said.

“TasPorts today is stronger, more mature and better positioned today than it was a decade ago, and the opportunity that lies ahead is significant."

Mr Donald has not revealed his future plans.
