WESTERN Australia’s newest lithium development is set to add another stream of battery‑mineral exports through Fremantle Port, following Develop Global’s move to bring the Pioneer Dome project into production this year.
The company has awarded MLG Oz a $70‑million mining and crushing contract, confirming Pioneer Dome’s transition from exploration to operations. The project, located south of Kalgoorlie near Norseman, will produce lithium concentrate for export to Asian battery manufacturers.
Although Pioneer Dome is closer to Esperance, its product will join the established supply chain that moves all of WA’s containerised lithium exports through Fremantle.
Industry analysts say Pioneer Dome’s output will be modest compared with WA’s major producers, but still meaningful for Fremantle’s growing battery‑minerals profile.
The project is expected to produce 40,000–60,000 tonnes of lithium concentrate annually, equating to roughly 2000–2500 TEU per year. Fremantle handled more than 800,000 TEU last financial year, meaning Pioneer Dome’s contribution will be incremental rather than transformational.
However, the strategic impact is more pronounced. Lithium concentrate is a high‑value cargo, and Pioneer Dome strengthens Fremantle’s position as Australia’s primary gateway for battery‑mineral exports, alongside nickel sulphate and spodumene from the state’s larger operations.
Lithium concentrate from Pioneer Dome will be trucked north to Perth for containerisation before export to markets in China, South Korea and Japan. The route mirrors existing supply chains used by Greenbushes, Mt Marion, Pilgangoora and Kathleen Valley.
Fremantle’s container terminals already handle the state’s entire lithium export trade, supported by established DG‑handling protocols, container‑packing facilities and shipping services operated by MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM and Hapag‑Lloyd.
The Pioneer Dome contract award comes amid continued investment in WA’s battery‑minerals sector, with several mid‑tier lithium projects advancing toward production. The state government has also emphasised downstream processing opportunities, including lithium hydroxide and nickel sulphate refining.
For Fremantle, the trend reinforces a shift in its export mix: while grain, alumina and vehicle imports remain dominant, battery‑minerals are becoming a signature growth commodity.
