QUBE subsidiary LCR Group has begun to service one of Brisbane’s biggest projects, the new 10.2km Cross River Rail Project, connecting Dutton Park in the inner south with Bowen Hills in the inner north.

LCR has been contracted to transport each of the major components of the tunnel boring machines.

The first shipment last week was a tunnel boring machine head, weighing up to 220 tonnes with a transport length of 66 metres.

The LCR team used the new 16-line modular trailer system in a push-pull combination of three prime movers and took more than six hours to travel just 26 kilometres.

This first shipment was the largest ever to be moved by road by LCR.

The twin tunnels will be constructed under the Brisbane River and CBD, drilled by the tunnel boring machines, which are expected to cut through 20-30 metres of earth and rock each day.

The project aims to unlock the bottleneck at the core of the transport network by delivering an additional 18,000 train seats, taking 14,000 drivers off the roads and cutting travel times in existing south-east Queensland train lines.
