MUA lodges fresh Teekay claim

MARINE services company Teekay Shipping is again in dispute with the Maritime Union of Australia.

A spokesperson for Teekay confirmed that the MUA had lodged an application for a Protected Action Ballot Order to progress bargaining with Teekay for a fleetwide agreement.

The application is before the Fair Work Commission.

This application follows an earlier dispute resolved in March in which the MUA claimed Teekay was using cheap foreign labour on the Absolute 1 bunker tanker operating at the port of Fremantle.

The MUA had filed for Protected Industrial Action, but a compulsory conference attended by both parties enabled normal work to resume.

As well as managing Absolute I for BP’s marine fuel services at Fremantle Port, Teekay operates vessels under long-term contracts with the Australian Government, including seven Defence Marine Support Services ships, and Australian Border Force’s Cutter Ocean Shield.

It handles operations, engineering, crewing, maintenance, supply and training.
