OFFSHORE & Specialist Ships Australia (OSSA) is seeking support for its Scholarship Fund, a new initiative aimed at providing financial and mentoring assistance to young Australians pursuing professional careers at sea.

OSSA is a not-for-profit organisation with nationwide membership drawn from across the maritime industry.

According to a statement, its vision is to promote and strengthen Australia’s maritime capability, including through our schools’ program, which introduces students to the diverse and rewarding career paths available within the sector.

OSSA chair Richard Owen said the scholarship fund aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and sea-going experience.

“Initially we are targeting our support with trainees who already hold an AMSA-approved trade qualification,” Mr Owen said.

“Through structured mentoring and financial assistance, successful applicants will be able to complete their required sea service and associated training.”

He said financial support would cover key costs such as approved sea time, travel, insurance, and related expenses, ensuring financial barriers did not prevent capable and motivated trainees from completing their qualifications.

“OSSA will work with shipowners to secure suitable berths and provide ongoing mentorship,” Mr Owen said.

All donations to the Scholarship Fund are tax deductible.

“We estimate the total cost per student at $30,000–$50,000, covering the full period of sea-going training,” Mr Owen said.

He said with OSSA’s longstanding commitment to maritime excellence and workforce development, support via sponsorship, provision of berths, or mentoring, would help OSSA in making a lasting contribution to the future of Australia’s maritime workforce.

Mr Owen said OSSA would welcome the opportunity to discuss this initiative further and explore opportunities to support the next generation of Australian seafarers.
