PILBARA Ports has unveiled an ambitious strategy to cement its position as a driver of regional economic growth.

The Port Development Strategy (PDS) proposed the future trajectory for the port system and addressed current conditions, while exploring future opportunities.

The roadmap focused on decarbonisation, increased demand for critical minerals, emergence of new technologies, and heightened expectations around environmental, social and governance standards.

An element of the last point is First Nations empowerment.

Pilbara Ports chief executive Samuel McSkimming said the PDS set an overarching direction during a time of transition.

“The Port Development Strategy will set the long-term strategic direction for our ports of continuing to facilitate iron ore and other bulk commodity exports, while unlocking the Pilbara’s possibilities for diversification and decarbonisation,” he said.

Key priorities identified within the PDS, already underway, include:

  • Delivery of Lumsden Point and Dampier cargo wharf projects.
  • Development of a trade growth and tenanting strategy.
  • Implementation of the Pilbara clean fuel bunkering hub strategic roadmap.

“It reaffirms our commitment to enabling economic growth and diversification while staying true to our values of safety, excellence, integrity, teamwork, and care, and staying focused on delivering our purpose to connect the possibilities of the Pilbara to the world,” Mr McSkimming said.

The PDS reflected current WA state government policies to promote industrial development in the Pilbara region.
