THE PORT of Melbourne (PoM) is showcasing its commitment to building a sustainable port for the benefit of the Victorian communities and businesses with the release today of its 2025 Sustainability Report.

“The 2025 report reflects our commitment to creating long-term value for Victoria – its people, environment, and economy,” CEO Saul Cannon said. “Looking ahead, we intend to deepen our collaboration with government, industry, and the broader community to drive even greater impact.”

The port’s Sustainability Strategy, refreshed in FY25, is anchored in People, Planet, Partnerships, and Prosperity. Guided by these themes, PoM says it aims to lead the decarbonisation of its supply chain, minimise its impact on its land, air, and waters, and build strong community and stakeholder relationships, including among seafarers.

PoM has ongoing long-standing partnerships with the Mission to Seafarers Victoria and the Stella Maris Seafarers Centre. In FY25, the port proudly supported the organisations to serve more than 18,000 seafarers.

In addition to cash contributions, PoM hosted 16 community port tours in FY25, donating 100% of ticket sales to the seafarer organisations. Notably, port funding assisted Stella Maris to install a lift, providing improved access to the centre. The port continues to facilitate opportunities for the seafarer organisations to participate in broader activities, it says.

Other milestones highlighted in the 2025 Sustainability Report include:

People

  • Maintaining “Tier 1 Skilled Workplace” certification in the Mental Health First Aid Australia Workplace Recognition Program.
  • Initiating its Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

Planet

  • Sourcing 61% of its electricity sourced from renewable sources.
  • Reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 62% since FY22.
  • Engaging with port stakeholders that collectively represent 78% of its Scope 3 emissions about climate resilience and decarbonisation opportunities.

Partnerships

  • Contributing $231,000 to community partners.
  • Delivering Port Education programs to 4,475 students – a 193% increase on FY24.

Prosperity

  • Handling a record $154 billion worth of goods through the port.
  • Facilitating 3.39 million TEU Sourcing from a supplier base comprising 96% Australian suppliers.

Mr Cannon said that sustainability continues to be a key aspect of the port’s operations, particularly as it caters to the needs of Victoria’s growing population and economy.

“As demand for trade continues to rise, we remain focused on embedding sustainability into our operations and growth, ensuring we deliver not only for today, but for Victoria’s future,” he said.
