Remembering 'The Admiral'; a tribute to Captain Don O'Donnell

Captain Don O’Donnell — affectionately known to so many of us as “The Admiral” — has crossed the bar. It was with great sadness that we learned of Don’s passing on Thursday 16 May, after a period of ill health. Our heartfelt condolences go to his beloved partner Trish and his sons Ash and Alex at this very difficult time.

Don joined Australian Offshore Services (AOS) during the 1970s, first serving at sea before later becoming operational manager for the organisation. Prior to AOS, he had enjoyed a distinguished career with P&O passenger ships, serving as a senior officer on several vessels. He brought to AOS not only immense maritime experience, but also the professionalism, discipline and leadership that helped shape the company during the formative years of Australia’s offshore energy industry.

Don played a major role in establishing AOS as a respected force within the offshore sector across Australia. He was instrumental in maintaining the vital relationships between the Melbourne and Perth offices and the seafarers serving aboard the famous “Lady” vessels. Many who worked alongside him at 356 Collins Street, or sailed under his management, remember him as an exceptional communicator and mentor who always knew how to steady the ship when challenges arose.

He also had a wonderfully theatrical side and a sharp sense of humour that made him unforgettable. One legendary example was Don’s famous “office summons” strategy.  If someone was called in to see the Admiral, the process unfolded with calculated precision:
Plan A: Keep them waiting for twenty minutes.
Plan B: Have Peter Barrow or Alan Morris walk past carrying an enormous file with the unfortunate person’s name emblazoned across it.
Plan C: Watch them sweat.

It was classic Don — firm, commanding, but delivered with a knowing grin and a touch of theatre that left everyone laughing afterward.

Outside the office, Don was always the star attraction at the Anchor Clanker gatherings, proudly addressing the room in full uniform, delighting everyone with his stories, wit and larger-than-life presence. He carried himself with dignity, humour and warmth, and earned the genuine respect and affection of all who had the privilege of working with him.

Those of us fortunate enough to know Captain Don O’Donnell will carry fond memories of a true maritime character, a leader, mentor and friend whose contribution to the Australian offshore industry was immense. He leaves behind a legacy built on professionalism, loyalty, humour and camaraderie.

Vale Captain Don O’Donnell.

Fair winds and following seas, Admiral. No doubt you are now commanding the big ship in the sky.

And to Trish, thank you for the wonderful care and support you gave Don throughout his later years. He was deeply respected and greatly loved by us all.
