INTERMODAL Terminal Company has taken delivery of its first four rail-mounted gantries for the Melbourne Intermodal Terminal at Somerton, in the city’s north.

ITC, which is wholly-owned by Aware Super, is developing the MIT as a privately-owned, open access, bonded facility located on the Hume Highway, 22.5 km from the Port of Melbourne by rail and close to other arterials and the Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine.

Due to begin operations in October this year MIT will be initially capable of processing 1 million TEU per annum over it 45 hectares, which will feature nine sidings, including of 1,800 metres for double-stacked interstate trains and 600 metres for Port Rail Shuttles. There will be 10 hectares of empty container parks.

The first shipment of RMGs from Finnish company Konecranes arrived in CKD form from Nantong on the COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers’ multi-purpose vessel Tian Wang Zhi Xing (7,460 GT) on 29 April and was discharged at the then MIRRAT (now AAT) Webb Dock West 1 berth.

Erection of the four cranes will commence later this week with the first RMG scheduled to be handed over to operations in September of this year, ITC says.

A second shipment of four will follow.
