THE NSW government today announced that it was going ahead with the Sydney Gateway road project, which is to connect WestConnex with the airport.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the project would “decongest” the area.

Speaking at the opening for a new warehouse facility for IFC Global Logistics, minister for roads, maritime and freight Melinda Pavey called it the “jigsaw announcement”.

“We’re putting the final piece of the puzzle around freight movements around Sydney Airpot and Port Botany,” she said.

Ms Pavey said once WestConnex was finished a driver would be able to go from Parramatta to Sydney Airport without a traffic light.

The freight minister said the state government aimed at getting freight off the roads.

“As our freight task doubles to 2040, we want to see at least 40% of that on rail,” she said.
